The Steve Perchyshyn Fire Rescue House
THE NEED
The purpose of the Fire Rescue Project is to provide appropriate, supportive, transitional housing for families who have lost their home due to fire.
This is the first Fire Rescue House in Canada where displaced families can be relocated following a fire. As a result, people who have experienced this trama often find themselves living in temporary situations that create additional distress (hotels, make-shift arrangements with friends or family, or even worse the family being split-up). A serious consequence of not having a suitable place to go is the delay of healing and the reintegration process.
The Fire Rescue House provides a 3 bedroom unit to which fire victims can be relocated immediately after a fire. the unit is complete with furniture, bedding, groceries and all the basic needs for the family in crisis.
THE PROCESS
Families who are identified by the Winnipeg Fire Department's Fire Commander are referred to the on-duty Platoon Chief who then contacts Garamark Propery Management. Garamark is the first response team who meet the famliy at the Fire Rescue House and help them settle in immediately.
The unit provides transitional housing for the period of time required to make more permanent living arrangements to a maximum of 1 month. Each situation will be unique and both North End Housing and Garamark are committed to assisting the family in addressing their needs in finding long-term accomodations.
The emergency units rent will be payable through the family's insurance, public appeals, social assistance, emergencie relief funds, etc. wherever possible. |
